So you have a wonderful picture of your kids or dogs and you want to have some fun by removing the background and dropping in a different background? Or maybe you just want to remove the background on a picture so that you can use it on a website or digital document? There are many ways to go about removing a background from images and all of them will give you different results. The best thing is to try a couple of different methods on your picture and see which one gives you the best results. In this post, I’m going to write about three methods: using Power. Point, using a website called Clipping. Premium Windows Themes. Free Desktop Themes, High Quality Wallpapers, Free icons packs, Visual Styles, Gadgets. Microsoft Windows, or simply Windows, is a metafamily of graphical operating systems developed, marketed, and sold by Microsoft. It consists of several families of. Magic and using an app on your Android or i. OS phone called Background Eraser. Remove Background using Power. Point. For desktop users with Power. Point installed, you can remove backgrounds very easily and fine- tune what parts you want to keep or remove. To get started, open Power. Point, click on Insert and then click on Pictures. Choose your picture and then click on the Insert button. Once your picture has loaded onto the slide, click on it to bring up the Picture Tools ribbon. At the far left, you will see a button called Remove Background. When you click on this button, it will automatically try to determine the background and highlight it in purple. Normally, this is not perfect and you’ll see that portions of what you want are highlighted in purple and vice versa. In my example, Power. How to Set Desktop Wallpaper as Start Screen Background in Windows 8.1?Point didn’t properly detect the face of one dog and the noses for all three! You can easily correct this by clicking on the Mark Areas to Keep button at the top left. Then you simply click and drag from one location to another that you want to keep. When you let go, it will automatically figure out which part to keep. It might end up adding more purple in another part of the image, but you can just draw another line to fix that. Here you can see I had to draw a couple of lines in order to get just the dogs. The Mark Areas to Remove button works the same way, except it will mark areas purple to be removed. When you are satisfied with your editing, click the Keep Changes button. The background should now be gone and you’re good to go! At this point, you can right- click on the image and choose Save as picture. In order to preserve the transparency, you need to make sure you save the file as an PNG or as a GIF. JPEG format does not support transparency. ![]() You can also add a new background while still in Power. Point by inserting a new picture and then right- clicking on your original picture and choosing Bring to Front. Here I inserted a picture of clouds and then moved my dog picture to the front. When you remove a background using Power. Point it automatically makes the removed part transparent, so you don’t have to manually make the background transparent. When you remove the background, you might see a little bit of the background around the edges of the main subject. This is really hard to remove in some images, but there is a nice trick that makes the cutout look a lot better in Power. Point. Right- click on the image and choose Format Picture. Now expand Soft Edges and increase the size a couple of points. You can see below how the image of the dogs looks better than the original one up top. Any remnants of the background will be removed when you soften the edges. Remove Background Using Clipping Magic. If you don’t have Power. Point installed, you can try out a website called Clipping. Magic that pretty much does the same thing. Either drag and drop your image into the box or click Upload Image. Now all you have to do is draw green and red sections on the image. Click on the green plus icon and draw just inside the section of the image you want to keep. Next, click on the red minus icon and draw just outside the section you want to keep. A yellow line will automatically appear around the main subject. On the right hand side, you’ll see the preview of the image immediately. If you’re not happy with it, you can click the Clear button and start again. You can also adjust the brush size if you feel it’s too big by clicking on the Brush button at the bottom. If you need to erase any green or red lines, you click on the Eraser button. Overall, it works really well and is super easy to use. Also, you can click on the Edges button and add smoothing and feathering effects to get rid of any remnants of the background. If you are dealing with hair, you know it can feel impossible to get rid of the background in- between hundreds of hairs, but you can click on the Hair button and read the instructions on how to fix that issue. The only downside to this site is that you have to pay in order to download a copy of your image. Not only that, they require you to subscribe to a monthly plan instead of having a one- time charge, which I would not mind paying if it was something really cheap. So here is what I suggest you do. Click on Background at the bottom and choose the white color. Now simply take a screenshot of your image and save it to your computer. You can now use a tool like Power. Point to make the white background transparent. It’s not the best solution, but it’s better than having to subscribe if you need to just remove the background on one image. Remove Background using Background Eraser. If you take most of your photos from your smartphone now, it will probably be easier to just download an app that can help you remove a background. Here are the ones I suggest for i. OS and Android: i. OS – https: //itunes. Android – https: //play. Once you install the i. OS app, Background Eraser will give you a blank screen like shown below. Tap on the small icon at the top left that has the mountain on it. It will ask you for permission to access your photos. When you agree, go ahead and select a picture from your camera roll. Once your image has loaded, you will see the buttons at the bottom become enabled. You can crop and adjust the colors, etc if you like. In our case, we want to tap on Erase. The erase tools will appear across the bottom. By default, Erase is selected and if you start to move your hand over the image, it will start erasing. There are a couple of things to note. Firstly, the width is set to max and you can adjust it by using the slider. In addition, there is an offset so that when you move your finger across the screen, the erasing will be offset from your finger so that you can actually see what you are erasing. You can also adjust this offset using the slider. Next, Restore will do the opposite of Erase and will bring back any part of the image you move your finger over. Target. Area is really handy and will allow you to simply tap on an area with similar background and remove it automatically. This is good for sections that have solid colors. Target. Color will allow you to pick one color in the image and have it erased anywhere else it shows up in the image. Lastly, Reverse will invert the selection. Using a combination of the tools, you can remove exactly the portions of the picture you want. Note that you can also pinch to zoom, which makes it really easy to get rid of those hard to get to parts. Finally, when you are done, tap on the Done link and then tap on the arrow at the top right. You can now save the picture out to your camera roll, email it, or share it onto social media. You can also choose from various sizes and choose between PNG and JPEG. Hopefully, you now have all the tools you need to remove a background from an image easily! If you have any questions, feel free to comment.

You Should Replace Your Smoke Detector Every 1. Years. You know that you need to replace your smoke detector’s batteries when they run out, but you might not realize that you should also replace the smoke detector itself every 1. Yes, even your fancy Nest detector falls under this guideline. This might sound like a ploy to get you to shell out for a new alarm every decade, but you’re better off doing it for several reasons: Peace of mind: You’ll know that your home has a working system to alert you in case of fire. You should make sure there’s alarms on each level of your home as well as one within earshot of your bed (many fires start when you’re asleep). Ideally, they’re interlinked so that when one goes off, they all go off so you get as early a warning as possible. Limiting effects to your insurance: If you have a homeowner’s or rental insurance policy, you likely have a section on protections your home must have to qualify for the policy. This often includes having working, non- expired smoke detectors. Even if your policy doesn’t have a section on this, alerting your agent that you have non- expired alarms can sometimes lower your rate or work in your favor during insurance investigations after a fire. Following other regulations: If you’re a landlord, you’re likely required to make sure your rental properties all have working, non- expired smoke detectors. Consumer Reports points out that you can test your smoke alarm’s sensors using a test spray that simulates smoke, but that the best thing is to just replace an alarm that has passed its expiration date. Check for the date by looking for the manufacture date on the underside of your alarm (the part that typically faces the ceiling). Add ten years to that date and you have your expiration date. You might want to write this date on a piece of painter’s tape or on the outside of the alarm so it’s easy for you to see when to pick up a new one. ![]() N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR3400 Setup Manual Getting to Know Your Wireless Router 3 Front Panel You can use the status lights on the front of the wireless. About a year ago, Comcast started modifying the routers of some of their customers to create a quasi- public wireless system called XFINITY Wi. Fi intended for use, mainly, by Comcast customers. Home users would see a new Wi- Fi network called . They tout it as a security feature, since the homeowner gets to keep their Wi- Fi password secret. Of course, this ignores the fact that many routers offer guest networks to solve just this problem. ![]() ![]() Sagemcom Fast 1704N and Fast 2704N are compact ADSL2+ Wi-Fi residential gateways, optimized for High Speed Internet service.![]() XFINITY Wi- Fi can save on typically limited 3. G/4. G bandwidth and it should be faster too. It may even let someone get away with a cheap Wi- Fi only tablet as opposed to a model with built- in 3. G/4. G/LTE. Either way, Comcast plans to have 8 million by the end of 2. To put this in perspective, Comcast has roughly 2. Internet customers. At Lifehacker, Melanie Pinola recently wrote . Here I will cover the obvious downsides to the service, some less than obvious drawbacks, and finally, a new security risk that no one has yet raised. If you read this entire article to the end (warning: it's long), I am sure you will agree. They also say that . We have provisioned the XFINITY Wi. Fi feature to support robust usage, and therefore, we anticipate minimal impact to the in- home Wi. Fi network. Unlike Wi- Fi channels, DOCSIS channels refer to wired connections between the cable modem and the home office of the cable provider. It is possible that the Comcast gateway devices (Arris Touchstone models in Houston) are configured to send guest traffic over a different channel or channels than traffic from the homeowner. But, to be clear, this is speculation on my part. Addressing this, Comcast says . She writes that . I would be concerned about my address being broadcast by the app or the website. Comcast does address this, but Lynn says . What if a guest, using the Internet connection in your home, does something illegal? Something so bad that law enforcement agencies get involved. This has come up many times before and is, perhaps, the most important reason not to share your home Internet connection. That is, they share a common public IP address (an IP address is the unique number that identifies a single entity on a TCP/IP network). You can see your public IP address at ipchicken. If they are not, anyone offering the service from their home, runs the risk of men with guns knocking on their door. That there are no detailed explanations of how this works, just makes one more doubtful. Bad guys with stolen credit cards can get online for an hour ($2. Bad guys without a credit card can use two free sessions of an hour each. But exactly what that means, they don't say. Likewise, the access passes are not available in all locations. Whether that means you can't buy them everywhere or you can't use them everywhere is, again, not spelled out. The data traffic needs to be separate over the air, in the router and as far as anyone on the Internet can discern. Their FAQ page has one relevant sentence: . None of our business. In part, I was drawn to the subject because of the huge parade of ghastly security flaws in routers. It seems when it comes to router firmware, quality is job 3. If they have flaws, someone is sure to find them. It is the same one used to logon to the Comcast website to manage an account. If a bad guy got hold of it (more on this below) there is a huge potential for abuse. They can add HBO and Cinemax to your account. Worst of all, they can logon to XFINITY Wi. Fi as you, do something illegal and have everything point back to you. Better yet, there should be a Wi- Fi only userid/password for each member of the family. A single userid/password being used for everything is too tempting a target. Afterwards, the system recognizes the device automatically. I suspect, however, that it is a big security flaw. Needless to say at this point, I could find no relevant documentation. But their software is not required. Any wireless enabled device can logon to XFINITY Wi. Fi. So, how might Comcast uniquely identify a particular device? From the start, MAC addresses were designed to be globally unique. The first 2. 4 bits identify the company that made the hardware, the last 2. A dual band router will have a MAC address for each wireless band. You can usually find the MAC addresses of a router on a sticker on the bottom. Based on the first half of the MAC address, the program is able to show which company made the wireless radio for the detected network. Here we see three networks, running on hardware from Belkin, Cisco- Linksys and Arris. The characters after the period are the last three hexadecimal characters of the MAC address. This lets you tell the router the MAC addresses of known trusted Wi- Fi devices. These devices are allowed in, all others get blocked. You can see a demo of configuring MAC address filtering for an Asus router here. No one uses it. The underlying communication protocol requires this. So, anyone who found themselves blocked by a router using MAC address filtering, could just listen for a valid MAC addresses communicating with the target network and then pretend to be that device. The pretending (called spoofing) is not all that hard. Rather than use a free one hour session, a bad guy can park near an xfinitywifi network and make a note of the MAC addresses of the devices using the network. Then all they need to do is fake their MAC address, get automatically signed in, do something illegal, and an innocent Comcast customer is in for all kinds of hell. The VPN will encrypt stuff, but that stuff gets sent to the router in a clump of bits (. At the least, they have over a million hotspots. It's hard to believe that I am the first person to publicly raise this issue. ![]() Windows won't start up, startup repair can't fix it - . When do you need to be concerned with formatting hard disk drive? If you're installing a new hard drive for the first time, removing errors from your hard drive, trying to get rid of a nasty virus, or even cleaning your hard drive to sell or donate your computer are a few of the many reasons why one might need to format a hard drive. The term format actually means to prepare a storagemedium (usually a hard drive or disk) for reading and writing. ![]() When you format a hard drive the operating system erases all . You must format a hard drive (floppy or hard disk) before you can use it. Format or Reformat? The Phrase Explained. Some people say they are . When you take a hard drive that has been previously formatted and run it through the format process again, it is referred to, logically, as reformatting. Before you Format Backup the Hard Drive. ![]() Before you can format a hard drive look at why you need the process done. If your objective is hard drive recovery, the first step will be to back up as much personal data and information from your hard drive as you need. When a hard drive format is planned ahead of time you certainly can copy and archive data off your hard drive before you start the format process. If your objective is to wipe and reload due to a virus that has already caused serious system damage, a backup might not be possible. How to Format Hard Drive. If you purchased your computer from a systems vendor - - such as a Dell, HP Compaq or Gateway system - - you most likely will have a setup or a restore- and- recovery CD (also referred to as a master CD) that came with the system. If this is the type of system you use, then a format is an easy process. The master CD will complete the format hard drive process, put the Windows operating system onto the computer for you, and also install any software and programs that came with the pre- configured computer system. If you no longer have your master set- up CD, you should contact the manufacturer to get a replacement. If you aren't using a pre- configured . Before you begin the formatting process, it is important to make sure you have all the drivers for your hardware located, the Windows CD and ant software to ensure a smooth setup. It's also important to know about your operating system before you format. If you're going to be putting a much older version of the Windows operating system - - such as Windows 9. Windows ME - - then you should have a Windows 9. ME start- up disk to complete the procedure. In this instance, you would restart the system with the start- up floppy disk in the drive. Upon system boot, you will choose to have CD- ROM support. Once the files load you can then choose to run the format command on your main drive (usually C drive but not always so check first). If you are using Windows 2. Windows XP or Windows Vista, the Windows installation process offers . Here you would ensure your computer is set to boot from CD- ROM (a setting in your system BIOS), insert the Windows CD and restart the computer. From there you will be on your way to format the hard drive. The Format Command. Format is a Microsoft DOS command. It's the command line you run to remove information from a computer disk, floppy disk or hard disk. It is an external command found in many of the Windows Operating systems. The format hard drive process is done in three steps: Low- level formatting creates the physical structure on the hard drive. Partitioning divides the hard drive into logical pieces that become volumes. High- level formatting defines the logical structures on the partition and places at the start of the disk any necessary operating system files. The format command syntax is the following: FORMAT drive: . To see the available Format command parameters for your operating system, you can type FORMAT /? In a case where you have accidentally completed a format hard drive, a computer specialist may be able to recover most or all of the data that was on the drive. Keeping in mid that data can be pulled from a newly formatted hard drive with the right tools, for any business or corporation that is planning to donate old computers to charity, this could pose a security risk if the hard drive contained confidential business information. Remember — just because you may donate the computer to charity that doesn't mean an honest person will end up with the hard drive. While that shouldn't deter you from recycling old computers in this way, it should be an incentive to ensure all business data has been completely wiped from the hard drive. Never just delete the files and assume they are gone because you can't see them on the hard drive. Businesses should at the very least run the format command to erase the hard drive. For a higher level of security we recommend you read the following Webopedia article: The safest method to completely remove data is to overwrite the disk. Any time you make a change to the Windows Registry, any responsible article will probably tell you to backup the registry first. But how do you do that? It’s not quite as simple as you might think. You can’t just backup and restore the registry like any other file — much of it can’t be modified by hand, and the files themselves can’t be replaced or copied over, at least not while Windows is running. And you can’t restore a full backup of the registry from an export file either. But there are a number of things you can do to backup sections of the registry, and you can use System Restore to actually restore the registry back to a previous state. Keep reading for all the details. What is the Registry? ![]() The Windows Registry is a hierarchical database that contains all of the configurations and settings used by components, services, applications, and pretty much everything in Windows. The registry has two basic concepts to be aware of: Keys and Values. ![]() ![]() ![]() Registry Keys are objects that are basically folders, and in the interface even look exactly like folders. Values are a bit like the files in the folders, and they contain the actual settings. For more on the registry and how it works, be sure to read our guide to using the registry editor like a pro. Backing up and Restoring Sections of the Windows Registry. For the most part, all you need to know is how to backup and restore sections of the registry, especially those sections that you might be attempting to edit. ![]() ![]() Luckily this process is fairly simple and works quite well almost all of the time. You can also backup sections of the registry that deal with application settings. Just head down to HKCU\Software or HKLM\Software and find the key that represents the application manufacturer that you’re trying to backup. Not all applications store their settings in the registry, but for those that do, you can often save their settings to a backup file using this technique, and then if you have to reinstall your computer, you can reinstall the application and just restore the settings by double- clicking on the registry backup file. It’s worth noting that this isn’t a foolproof process, but we’ve used it quite a bit over the years. For example, if you were messing around in HKEY. And yes, the Briefcase is still a thing for some reason. To backup that section of the registry, just right- click on the key on the left- hand pane and choose Export from the menu, saving the file out with a name that you’ll recognize later. We’ll save it as HKCRstar. Now you can go ahead and make whatever changes you’d like to test from underneath that key, because you have a backup file. ![]() Restoring that backup is as simple as double- clicking on the icon and choosing to restore the information into the registry. You can use the same technique for anything in the registry you’d like to backup. And if you try to delete the whole registry, things are going to break. Backing Up the Whole Registry to a . ![]() ![]() File. You can absolutely make a whole copy of the registry as a . Right- click, and export. The resulting file will be enormously gigantic, and you probably don’t want to open it up in Notepad. If you double- click on the registry file, you’ll see an error message letting you know that not all of the entries were restored because some of the keys are open by the system, etc. Windows Server 2016 / Windows 10 64 bit / Windows 10 / Windows Server 2012 / Windows 2008 R2. At its core, the Data Access Project works just like any other IFTTT recipe, except instead of creating a recipe to turn your porch light on, recipes start with data. And that’s the problem with this method of backing up the registry — it doesn’t work all that well for serious changes like installing applications or something else where you might really need to restore the whole registry. You also really don’t want to keep this type of full registry backup around for a long time, because there’s no way to know what changes are stored in that registry file and whether or not they are going to break something when you restore it. Luckily there’s a better way to backup the registry, and it won’t break your PC. Using System Restore to Properly Backup Your Registry. Any time you’re going to be making serious changes to the registry, installing things like drivers, or changing a lot of settings all at once, you should just set a System Restore point, which you can easily use to restore from at a later date. It also has the side effect of doing a backup of the registry. You can make a restore point easily in just a few clicks. Search the Start Menu or screen for “Create restore point” and you’ll be presented with the option real quick. Now you can click the Create button, give the restore point a descriptive name, and it will be immediately created. To restore from that restore point, just search the Start Menu for “System Restore” and open up the wizard. Select the restore point you want to restore from, go through the wizard, and that’s it. You’ll often have better luck restoring from Safe Mode though. If you are running Windows 8 or later, you can actually access both Safe Mode, and System Restore, directly from the boot menu by using Shift+Restart. |
